Sound crackling/distorted

Hi all, I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me. About a month ago I suddenly began getting distorted sound/crackling while playing games or music, even scrolling my mouse wheel to scroll down web pages caused any music that was playing to slow down to the point that it sounded like it was going in slow motion. I've tried a new soundcard, a new graphics card, but to no avail. My PC is a Dell Dimension 9200 and I'm running Vista. I've reformatted countless times, used driver cleaner etc, swapped in different sound cards and graphics cards but nothing has fixed the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated

Regards

Tom

Hi Tom,

Have you run a memory test on your PC? If you moved your mouse and it caused your pc to lag or jerk when playing music or sounds, it could be memory causing the issue.

I know Vista has a built in memory tester when you press F8. When you get the options like Safe mode, press F8 again, press Tab and it should be "Memory diagnostics"

Failing that, you could run a memory test using memtest86. it's free to download, so is the Microsoft version of it.

I'd go with memory first, if you've reformatted on several occasions.

Hi Kevin, cheers for the reply. I've just ran the memory diagnostic and it came back saying there were no errors found. Whenever I move my mouse, click on windows to minimize them, mouse over things or scroll the sound crackles.
