Runs slow/Doesn't respond

Hey guys. I bought a computer back in late June, and for a month it worked great, however about a month ago it just started having problems.

Whenever I tried to run any program, whether it be firefox or itunes, over and over again it stopped responding. I got on the phone with HP numerous times and we couldnt help the problem. Then they had me run a harddrive test and they would call me back, well it stopped during the first test (a quick test that was supposed to be followed by an hour-long test) and yet no error message came up. Well the day after i unfortunately left for vacation and since getting back, have been hammered with work and school.

So right now im coming to you guys for any suggestions. I've already tried disabling start-up programs, and that didnt work. If i dont have this solved by tomorrow afternoon im gonna call up HP and basically force them to dispatch the truck to pick this hunk a junk up and send it to a repair center. But if you guys have the answer, I'd love to try it out and save time that way.

2.66 GHz Processor... i think, im pretty sure it's around that #

Go for a system restore, if that fails, try and format it back to it's factory settings.
