Screen goes dark soon after the computer finishes booting

After my laptop starts up, when it gets to the desktop screen, a moment after the taskbar programs load, the screen goes dark. By that, I mean that it's like the brightness goes down to zero (I usually have it set to 50%, but I've found the brightness setting doesn't matter). But strangely, all I have to do to get it back to normal is either to close the laptop, and after I open it the brightness level is back to normal, or go into the NVIDIA Control Panel...and I don't even have to change any of the sliders. Simply clicking on any of them, like brightness or contrast, puts the brightness back to normal.

The trouble is, this is really annoying, since I have to do this every time I start the computer. What might be causing this? Is my graphics program having trouble storing my memory setting? Is the screen going into power-saving mode for some reason, despite being plugged in and despite that I have the computer on High Performance and the power saving options turned off? And of course, what can I do so my computer starts with the correct brightness and I don't have to change it everytime I start it?

Thanks in advance :-)

Hi, I would download the latest Nvidia drivers to your desktop. Now uninstall the old driver and reboot, then install new driver.

Sorry for the long wait with the response.

I'm not sure if I need a new graphics driver, or what one I should get. I currently have whatever came with the computer.

My directxdiag file:

I updated my graphics driver to the latest NVIDIA driver (186.81), but that seemed to make the problem worse.

Now, when I start my computer, it always starts out dark instead of just sometimes, and closing the laptop doesn't fix it. Instead, I have to go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and switch it from "Other applications control color settings" to "Use NVIDIA settings". But my computer doesn't remember that, and everytime I start the computer, it starts with "Other applications control color settings" and I have to change it back to get a correct color scheme.

Please, I know that this forum might not be the most visited one, but I haven't gotten a single response to this question on the IBuyPower forum, and I'm not sure what other forum could help me with this problem.

Help me out here.

Hi, you can roll back the driver in device manager>got to video right click and select roll back driver.
Is this a laptop? Is so please post brand a model number.

What happends if you uninstall the driver and reboot using windows generic driver?

Hi.

Thanks for responding. It's been really annoying to have this problem, but not find anyone willing to help.

I didn't want to uninstall the driver, so I went to the Device Manager and disabled my graphics card:

The screen switched to 800x600 resolution, and I restarted my computer. Unexpectedly (for me at least), when it finished booting it started at the correct brightness setting, and never changed back. I Enabled the driver and restarted again, and as usual, the computer booted up, looked fine for a few seconds, then suddenly went dark, and I had to go into the NVIDIA control pannel to switch it back.

So, at least I know it's an annoyance with the graphics driver, but it's still automatically switching to the too-dark setting when the computer loads.

Also, I updated the driver from 7.15 to 8.16, so here's my updated DxDiag file:

My laptop is an IBuyPower CZ-9 Ultra-3 Mark II.

Hi, this may be worth a try>in the run box type in>msconfig>now you will see a startup tab>look for nVidia and unselect any thing that is listed and select ok.
You may be asked to reboot>select yes.
Hopefully it should now work.
If not I still have another choice.
