Advice, please - explorer.exe @ 99%

I've reviewed the other posts on this issue and there doesn't appear to be a solution (in fact the previous message describes an identical problem!) I'd appreciate some **expert** advice but please note that this is NOT a hardware problem but rather most likely related to a Spyware Hijack attempt. And before someone suggests running Spybot or AdAware . . . that doesn't work because the applications will not launch because explorer (the XP GUI) is using all CPU cycles. I have a HijackThis log and will post it upon request.

The problem began after opening a file that had scanned OK w/NAV. The file immediately initiated a browser/web call and I shut down access with ZoneAlarm Pro but the damage was done. Next reboot saw 99% explorer.exe CPU utilization and trying to restore to previous point resulted in a "log-in/log-off loop" (e.g. "Windows is loading settings" immediately followed by "Windows is saving settings")

I performed an XP Repair Install and recovered the basic system but explorer.exe remains at 99%. Appklication access is possible only through the Command line.

I rebooted system with Selective Start allowing required files only but CPU utilization remains at 99%. A HijackThis log is available of this boot.

Any help is MOST appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

By the sounds of it mate I would just format and start again. Even if you fix the problem there will probably still be traces of it on your system.

It all depends on if you have anything you need to backup. If you do your best bet would be to pop your Hard Drive in another Computer and copy your docs over that way.

Sorry I cant be any more help

can you get into the Registry in the safe mode ? if so, go to Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Currentversion/Run and on the right panel remove all the entries except for Default and "HotKeyCmds" .. also search the registry for these names:
Casino
Buddy
Toolbar
Savenow
BarginBuddy
Optimizer
if you find any of them, remove the KEY.

Please let us know if you have any success.

cheers
