Can No Longer Install Many Programs

Windows XP Home - Logged in as an Administrator:

I can't install programs like I used to and when I go to Windows Update it freezes when it gets to the "Install Progress" part. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

with no more then you give us to go on a good start would be do a disk clean up, click more options and clean up system restore, defrag then go to my computer, right click the C: drive select properties, then tools, then error checking put checks in all the options and click ok, ok that it needs a reboot to do it, then reboot, let it run. see if you still have the trouble.

At one time I had a similar problem when no installation would occur after a download. I traced this to a confflict situation between two anti-virus programs I had installed.

anti virus software and firewalls are like the highlander movies "there can be only one" never have two firewalls, or anti virus installed on the same machine. just use one good one of each.
