Try doing a defrag on C: drive (Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter. disable any antivirus on-access scanner before starting the defrag, otherwise it will just keep restarting and never finish.

I did a defrag and it is quicker getting from the log on screen, however it is the menu bar that is taking its time now, and funnily enough getting the browser to fire up is slow

One way to speed up the startup on your desktop is to disable certin startup items. Click Start, go to run, and type in msconfig. Then click the startup tab. Go in there and disable some background programs that take time to load up. Or just disable everything and then re-enable the stuff you need.
Also, when you restart your computer you will get a windows that says somthing about doing system restore if your settings get messed up from the startup screen. Just check the box to never display this message again and click ok.

In addition to defrag, you should also delete temp files and run chkdsk. Here's an article from microsoft that tells you how to speed up your computer.

I have an idea pks1414
Go to Run -> Type msconfig -> Open the 'startup' tab and uncheck everything except your antivirus, firewall and any other critical software.
Your computer should boot faster now
Just to note.... I only have my antivirus and firewall starting on boot up. Anything else can be started as and when i need them with a double click.

I have the same problem. After login, my laptop hangs for at least two minutes with no hard drive activity, no icons, no taskbar, and no accessibility. I've been reading forums all over for the last two days straight to try and solve it, but no luck so far. I've heard everything about msconfig, anti-virus programs, spyware, and the like. My system is as clean as I can get it without performing a format. The closest I came to solving this was a Microsoft article relating to the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and how if it has pending updates, it may hang up to two minutes after passing the login screen before the icons and taskbar appear. However, nothing in the article helped, including disabling everything that has to do with BITS. Maybe someone else will have better luck than I.
