Cant access my files in a protected folder

I have 2 harddrives, and one of them has my files on it (My Documents, Music, etc.). I am using windows on the first drive in my computer (20gb), and the other, w/ my files, is a 200gb drive. I cant boot off of my 2nd drive, because of a "Disk read error", but I can view and modify all my files on it from my first drive. BUT, when I was using xp on my 2nd drive, when it worked, I selected the protect my files option under my main account, and now I get an "access denied" message when I try to view them. Is there anyway I can get at these files, because theyre really important to me. Thanks!
