windows xp restarts computer

When I turned on my computer the xp screen starts and then the computer gives me the option of starting in safe mode, last known good configuration, safe mode with command prompts, etc. When I choose any of these options, the xp screen starts to load and then the computer shuts down and restarts. I put in the xp disc and now I have 2 versions of xp on it. The old version still has the start up problem. But I can't get to any of my old files or programs with the new install. What do I do?

that link will tell you how to get back into the files you had. after that you can delete the old windows folder, then go to start>run>type
msconfig
click ok then go to the boot.ini tab, click check all boot paths, then ok it to remove the boot path from the old copy.
