Screensaver not activating

I recently installed Windows XP Pro and I have not been able to get the
screensaver to activate in the allotted time. I have tried all the default
screensavers and a webshots screensaver and none work. They all preview
fine but just never kick on. Also, my monitor and hard drives wont shut
down after their time either. I have tried reinstalling my monitor,
display, and any other device driver I can think of and nothing has worked.
Everything looks fine in the registry in relation to the screensaver, but it
will just not turn on. I have all the service packs and the newest directX
if that even makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

-Chris

i have no absolute answer, i can suggest that you check for bios updates for the motherboard and chipset+video drivers. the only time i ever seen this was a person had a corded optical mouse and the computer tower made a slight vibration causing the mouse to move just enough that it kept the screen saver, hibernation, and standby features from kicking in.

I haven't seen this before either. Have you been using the "Apply" button before the "OK" button?

My solution

I had the same problem and the cause was the Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse. It has to do with HID(Human Interface Device) which is active when the keyboard/mouse receiver(in my case a Microsoft Wireless Receiver version 3.0) is connected via a USB port. To solve the problem I connected the receiver using the ps/2 connectors supplied(need small adaptor for mouse2ps2). Screensaver now works as does the wireless keyboard/mouse.
I would not be suprised if the same problem exists with Windows Vista.
