Networking problem

I've just networked 2 PC's, mine (XP pro sp1), and my lads (Win 98 SE).

I now find if I shut down my PC without closing the dial up first, the line will remain open, and I have to switch my PC back on.

This happens regardless of whether my lads PC is on or not.

Any help Guys?
