Exclamation Hardware problem?? Please help.

Hello.
I am using XP home edition. I've had my Lexmark X83 all in one connected and it's been fine. I just bought a new scanner and connected/installed.
My problem is I cannot get both to work together!
I have installed, uninstalled manually and using the hardware wizard. When I check the device manager, I get this:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)"

So, I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled. Good, now the scanner is working.......
but now the printer (lexmark) is out!!

I cannot get both to work together?? I've tried different ports also, thinking that maybe one of the ports were bad, but it made no difference. All ports are working (USB)

Can anyone please help?
Thank you!

Sounds like an IRQ conflict. When you install the software for the scanner and printer, make sure they are in both entirely different directories.

thank you for your fast reply! I'm sorry, but I don't know how to do that. Could you explain a little more?
What do you mean by different directory? (guess I'm not as smart on the puter as I thought!)

When you have them both plugged in, I am assuming they are USB, go to your control panel, click on system, hardware, device manager. You should be able to see them somewhere in there, probably under USB Controllers. Right click on them, properties. See if there is a conflict between the settings. If so, you will have to change one.

Also, when you first installed them, did you install the software first, then plug them in? Or did you plug them in prior to starting? If so, uninstall both completely. Install one of them. plug the device in. Ensure that it works properly. Install the software for the second one, then plug it in.

Hi again.

Ok....I did that and when the properties come up, it show the locations of both at "location 0"

So. I will go ahead and uninstall both completely and follow what you said, installing in different directories.

I'll be back!

Thanks again

It didn't work. Printer is back, but scanner is out. I can't believe it should be this difficult for people to add hardware to their set up.
I know a little about computers, but some people know less....how do they do it?

When I check the device properties, I don't get that there is a conflict, just the code I mentioned above.
I'm lost!

Thanks for helping. If you have any other suggestions, I'll try them

I've been working on this on and off for 4 days now. So any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks again
