computer locks up when downloading windows updates

i have windows xp home edition. anyway, when i go to the windows updates site or they download in my system tray, at some point my computer locks up. why does this happen? how am i supposed to d/l, and install, updates now? any ideas/suggestions? my mouse arrow freezes, and i have to shutdown, and restart, my computer. i believe ctrl-alt-del wouldn't work, as i have had my mouse arrow freeze in the past (unrelated to my current problem)

I think you are running a very early version of the Windows UPdate client/software. Download the redistributable version of the windows update software. Once the newest version is up and running, you should have no problems.

no errors; just locks up. by the way, how, and where, do i "Download the redistributable version of the windows update software"?
