Please help black screen problem

Hey! This is my first post here so just wanna say hi

I have a problem with windows xp. I just installed it and the thing is at times when you click on your login name and put in your password and hit enter... sometimes when you try and log in the monitor turns black it's still on and nothing happens even if you wait a half hour and you have to reboot and sometimes when i log on and then try and log out it does the same thing the whole screen turns black and you can't do anything you have to reboot? what could be the problem? Please let me know if you have any suggestions

Did you have this problem when you boot into it first time ?
Did you set the video resolution too high may be ??

I've actuall always had it until i upgraded my memory to DDR 512 333

But my computer is all new stuff man it shouldn't be that ti's weird and my resolution is really high but you know even now like hwne my hard disks turn off i then come back and my monitor blinks an dnothing happens i have to restart when my hard disks stop and when it ry o restart them

any suggestinos?
