Problems with upgrading Windows XP (reinstalling)

Recently, my pc blue screened and forced me to reboot. Upon rebooting everything responded in slow motion like fashion (it took 10 minutes to load from a fresh boot when it normally takes one or two).

So I decided to try to boot in safe mode but it would not boot. Also, I tried to restore from last known configuration that worked but it still would not boot.

On the next boot up it stalled at the initial Windows XP screen with the moving blue bar below the logo, then it would briefly blue screen and then auto reboot on its own (I could not view the blue screen long enough to see the error message).

I have an additional harddrive on the machine with XP loaded. So, I booted from that harddrive without problems. I was able to salvage some important files from my other harddrive, but it denied me access to some.

I then made a suggested changed to the registry so the other verison of XP would not auto reboot upon blue screening. Then I proceeded to boot from the original (the one that would not boot) and it finally started XP, but once again everything was extremely slow.

So, my current step in the process is trying to reinstall XP (upgrade without loss of files/applications). While trying this, Windows XP Setup is not copying all of the setup files and it states that not copying some of these files may lead to a failure of installation. It also appears to be copying extremely slow.

Any suggestions on what might be the cause of my problems?

*edit*

Version of XP: Latest version available of Windows XP Professional with the most current updates

Pentium 3 @ 450 mhz, 512 ram, 80 gig HD and 12 gig HD

When it first "blue screened" I had microsoft excel and access open along with a cd burning application. The initial error message stated that the blue screen could be a result of a device driver. The only new device that I installed was a Sony Mavica MVC-CD1000 digital camera. Windows automatically detected the camera and install the software itself.

Some other error messages I have received in this process are as follows:

Unmountable_Boot_Volume
Stop: 0x000000ED (0x81F900, 0xc00009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

When trying to boot in to Safe Mode with Command Prompt:

Process_Initialization_Failed
Stop: 0x0000006B (0xC00000010, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

And while trying to copying a file from the harddrive XP Pro will not boot on, when running XP Pro under my harddrive that works :

"Cannot copy (*file*) Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

BOW WOW WOW...

i have suggestions on what you could do ad what the problem might be.

problem may be:

maybe yours hard drive with the xp that wont boot is broken or something, i dont know. maybe it has a virus on it.

fix it?:

umm go to microsoft.com and create setup boot disks and reinstall xp on that drive because if it is a virus the drive will be formatted and goodbye files and viruses.

im no expert but if any of that helped you, or i just didnt give you good enough details come back and maybe we can sort this mess out.

peace

Boot into command prompt and attempt to copy through dos.
for example:

c:\>md backup [enter]
c:\> copy d:\windows\docume~\my docume~\*.doc c:\backup [enter]

hope that helps.
