Question Can't install XP service pack 1a without activation?

Hey there,

I tried installing Windows XP service pack 1a the other day but it keeps telling me that I haven't activated Windows or something. What does this mean?

I'm installing it on a system at home that doesn't have an Internet connection, deliberately I might add.

Is there any workaround that I could use to get the service pack installed? I've got a couple of applications that recommend service pack 1 and I need to get them installed.

Thanks a lot.

Hi canobi2004

In order to use a legitimate version of either XP Home or XP Professional, the product has to be activated within 30 days of installation.

Browse to the following link and activate the product by phone: -

Question Need to connect to Internet?

Hi Jazz,

Thanks for the lightning response. So do I need to have an Internet connection for the activation?

Thanks.

"If you cannot establish an online connection by using your modem or an Internet connection, the wizard prompts you to contact a customer service representative and activate your copy of Windows XP by telephone."

Near the bottom of the page that Jazz posted are the instructions for activating by phone.

How to Activate Windows XP by Phone

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative and activate Windows by phone:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.
-or-
Click the Windows Activation icon in the status area of the taskbar.
2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
3. Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.
4. Follow the steps that are displayed in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next. Please note: the number will be displayed at this point and will differ based on the location you select.
5. When activation is complete and you receive the following message, click OK.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.
