Xp Hopeless!

Does anyone feel like me about XP. Since buying it from it's introduction there have been so many updates and security 'holes' that needed filling that I fear the product was no where near being ready for the market place. I have had numerous problems over time - loosing important information, programme crashing, computer seizing etc - the majority of which when rectified have been because of XP (or because of the vulnarability of XP). I dont think it fair that buyers should spend time and money sorting out something that should not have been sold in the first place untill it was ready. Buy any other product in such a condition and you would be justified in taking it back and if needs be claiming compensation.

The bulk of users, like me, have no knowledge of the inner workings of computers and use same either in their business or perhaps home administration, internet etc. Surely we should expect products we purchase which are designed to save time and help us in our daily tasks, expect that they actually do this! I have spent god knows how much time and money on this wonderful animal, and I question now exactly what use it has been to me. When working it is great, but a lot of the time I am trying to resolve some problem; which nine times out of ten is either because of or because of the vulnerability of XP.

Do you feel like me that Microsoft has used all us purchasers as unpaid product testers?

Love to hear what you think!

I've been running XP for about three years now, the only trouble I have ever had was my fault, if you keep it upgraded and keep it free from virus, trojans, adaware and spyware it works great.

Yes, originally I did upgrade and I agree with you it was bad! A while ago I purchased XP Professional, and whilst it is a lot better it still gives me problems. Also Microsoft are forever upgrading it. As for Service Pack SP2 - this should be binned. It is horrendous.

I've Used XP Pro, for about 3 years, and have had no major problems with it. I upgraded to SP2 without so much as a glitch. My current setup has been going for almost a year now. and it's the longest i've gone without reformatting and reinstalling. I keep my virus scan up to date, and and Adware and SpyBotm, updated regularly, and have had no problems with it.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's a pretty good product, alot better than Windows ME.

For what i've seen most of the problems that occur with XP, are usually user provoked. User's downloading strange stuff or clicking on links that pop up on pages, or even messing around with settings they know nothing about.
[EDIT]O.k, so maybe that was a little harsh, but more than half the time i've found myself fixing stuff the user messed up. The 40% of the time it's some misterious service failure or corruption in some obscure windows component caused by a virus, or spyware or something similar. And then theres the failures that just have no explanations and drive you up the wall, because they require a repair, or reinstall. Theese corruptions are caused in a high percentage from what i've seen by Windows itself, when it has a problem saving a file, or adding a key, or making a change to something that for unknown reasons fails, and casues even the tiniest of discrepancies, the next time Windows tries to access it, it finds that whatever it is expecting is not there. And automatically stops wahtever it was doing. But when you attempt to access it with a third party app you find out that its pretty muhc intact, and it can be acessed. Case in point: A Corrupted backup y NTBACKUP, Whe i tried to open it with NTBACKUP it says it cannot open it, but if i open it with a third party app, everything was there and could be recovered. so yeS I AGREE XP has it's problems, but it's a whole lot better than the Windows ME crap they issued at some point. Heres hoping that Longhorn will be even better.

[EDIT]
Windows XP might not be perfect, but regular maintainance and common sense when using it. will always produce a more pleaseant experience with it.

my sister has a pc and was complaining that ever since she bought it,its been a load of rubbish.

why is it so slow... why does it crash a lot.... why do i get so many pop ups... and other complaints.

so i went to have a look, it turns out she had no firewall and had never updated her antivirus at all.

so... did a reinstall, d/l zone alarm and avg anti virus, and other useful utilities and you've guessed it, not had a problem since.

so i have to agree with the above post, sometimes its the user, not so much a fault with xp.

also, she had never heard of defragment eiether, and when i had a look at the hardrive it was a mass of red lines.

before we did the reinstall i had a peek at the performance in the task manager, and the graph was going up and down like a brides nightie
