Freakish Issue: CDROMs will not play music CDs...???
OK, here's my issue:
I just built a PC, AMD Athalon system, WinXP PRO, running a 52X CDROM and a 16X CDRW... The drives work fine for everything so far- theyt load apps, read burned CDs, the burner works fine with Nero and Musicmatch Jukebox for data and audio CD creation...
So, last night I went to rip some of my music CDs into MP3s, and the audio CD would not play in EITHER drive... It just kept re-spinning and stopping the CD over and over. I couldn't PLAY OR RIP any audio CDs at all...
At first I thought it might be my player (Musicmatch) so I deleted the app thinking it might be corrupt, and then before I reinstalled I tried Windows Media Player with the same results- the disc just spins and spins and Windows gets really super slow/locked up while the CD is trying to play, forcing me to reboot! I tried Deleting both the drives from Hardware Manager and rebooting so the drivers would reload with still no dice. I tried multiple audio CDs with the same results.
I finally went to an old Win98 box I had and all the CDs played and ripped just fine. WTF?? ANy suggestions??
