Freakish Issue: CDROMs will not play music CDs...???

OK, here's my issue:

I just built a PC, AMD Athalon system, WinXP PRO, running a 52X CDROM and a 16X CDRW... The drives work fine for everything so far- theyt load apps, read burned CDs, the burner works fine with Nero and Musicmatch Jukebox for data and audio CD creation...

So, last night I went to rip some of my music CDs into MP3s, and the audio CD would not play in EITHER drive... It just kept re-spinning and stopping the CD over and over. I couldn't PLAY OR RIP any audio CDs at all...

At first I thought it might be my player (Musicmatch) so I deleted the app thinking it might be corrupt, and then before I reinstalled I tried Windows Media Player with the same results- the disc just spins and spins and Windows gets really super slow/locked up while the CD is trying to play, forcing me to reboot! I tried Deleting both the drives from Hardware Manager and rebooting so the drivers would reload with still no dice. I tried multiple audio CDs with the same results.

I finally went to an old Win98 box I had and all the CDs played and ripped just fine. WTF?? ANy suggestions??

Man, have I stumped everyone?

Just a bit more info on the symptoms in case it helps someone figure out what's going on:

Last night I went to make a CDR with Nero, and Nero could not find the CDRW drive that's on my system. I had just used it a few day before with Musucmatch to make an audio CD. I deleted the CDRW drive from Device Manager (even though it reported the drive was working fine), and it naturally reloaded it with the XP driver upon re-boot. Following that, the drive was recognizable to Nero after it scanned the IDE bus.

Could it be something strange like the cable connection on the mobo or perhaps the IDE cable that's causing these errors? I don;t see how it could be the drives, because what's the chance that BOTH CD drives are having the same problem with CD audio and now this weird disappearing drive as far as the CDRW apps are concerned?

What version of NERO are you using?
It is probably NERO causing all your problems.

Check to see if your drive is supported by NERO.

It's the Lite-On LT-16102B, and the version of Nero I'm using CAME BUNDLED WITH that drive. The version of Nero I'm using is 5.0.4.9, which according to their website is the version that's needed to run the software with that drive. The drives do this whether Nero is installed or not.
