Harddrive "unformatted" (?!?)

Can any hardware gurus help me on this?

I had just changed out my motherboard, reinstalled everything and set my former master IDE drive to slave. I installed Windows XP Pro on a new master IDE drive. Win XP is up & running on the new drive. When I open Win Explorer, I can see my old drive as the "D:" drive, but when I click on it, a message box pops up to say that the drive is unformatted. The new master is formatted FAT 32, the slave may be NTFS (I don't remember) but I figure it shouldn't make a difference, as XP recognizes both.

The other very important bit of info is that the reason why I had set my former master drive to slave is because I had gotten a message saying that one of my system files was corrupt and I was unable to fix the problem using the XP repair option on the installation disk. I had an extra drive lying around and switched the old master to slave & tried installing the XP OS on the spare drive. When I selected the spare drive to be reformatted an XP installed, the computer started reformatting my OLD master. I shut down the computer as quickly as I could - have NO clue why the old drive was being reformatted when I specifically chose the new drive. Well, I'm sure that the reformatting process didn't get far - about 5 seconds worth at the most, about 2% of a 60GB drive. In order for me to ensure that the new master drive would be the one reformatted, I unplugged the cables to the slave.

So... I still have data that I had not backed up on my old drive (shame on me, I know). Am I completely screwed? Is there any way to recover it? Will Norton Utilities help? (Haven't used Norton Disk Doctor in years)

Any suggestions very much appreciated!
