internet wont work

on my friends computer his internet wont work, and he uses AOL for broadband. heres what happen, it says "checking password, blah blah blah and so forth and then when it says initializing cable modem, it fails to do so and then it does attempt 2, and fails once again and is unable to connect to the internet,

can anybody help us??

How can AOL check the password before initialising the modem?

In addition to the comments made by LooseChippings, the first thing that should be ruled out is the possibility of your friend's 'ISP', if you can call it one (LOL) encountering connectivity problems in his/her area.

Once that is ruled out, then start troubleshooting.

umm no..

he lives like a block away from me, the area is fine.

i dunno if it checked the password first i cannot remember.

If it says checking password and it does connect then AOL is receiving tha packet with the details but they are not allowing to connect after reading the password.

If he has made no changes to the computer then it may well be there fault and he should ring them up and ask them the what is wrong.

If the settings were off and such then when he clicks connect he would get UNABLE TO ESTABLISH A CONECTION. But if he is reading checking password then it is getting through just not finalizing.
