Windows XP system Shutdown help (not Sesser)

Hi.
Whenever I tell my PC to shutdown, everything goes fine until I get to the "Windows is Shutting down" text (the last one).
After that it just hangs and I have to use the button to manually turn it off.
This happens every time and is quite annoying as I have to manually turn off my comp instead of knowing it will shutdown and going to sleep at night
Any ideas on how I could stop this from happening?
Thanks

Sounds like a non ACPI HAL has been installed. Did this happen after your last install of XP? If so then you will have to live with it until you decide to do another install, changing the HAL after XP is installed is not very successful and can lead to all sorts of problems.

I do not know what a non ACPI HAL is lol.
One thing I forgot to mention that this started happening about a week after I installed Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus on my comp (but not straight after), could that make any difference to the shutdown procedure?

Have you tried disabling, or shutting down those Norton programs before shutting down your PC?

V

PS - BTW: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...c_mcc_htev.asp

Little note on ACPI. However I thought that was more for putting the PC into Hibernation or Snooze mode, not for shutting down?

Hi.
I tried disabling Norton IS and AV and even killed their processes but my comp still hung on the "Windows is shutting down" screen.
I really have no idea what is causing this to happen so if anyone can help me further I'd be very grateful.
Thanks

Do you have a Gateway computer? If so, see this from Gateway Support:

"Computer Stops Responding at the Windows is Shutting Down Splash Screen"
