trouble saving images in xp
all images i save from the internet (or HAVE saved) by means of right click > save as... do not work. when i save as i am opted to save as either .art or .bmp, so i save it as either, but when i look in the folder i saved the images in, it tells me its a jpeg image, and it won't display. when i try opening it in paint, paint tells me it isn't a proper bitmap, when i try opening it in internet explorer, it get that horrible red x. the only images that wrork are .gifs, because when i right click > save as... a gif, i can actually save it as a .gif. any other image is saved as .art or .bmp.
any suggestions?
i hope that is understandable. if not, i will try to explain it clearer.

thanks, but none of those helped with my problem
allow me to clarify more...
the problem with the red x's is not while i'm connected to the internet. the images work online, but when i save them and reopen them they don't work.
so, say i right click>save as...
and the image is caled "image"
i can either save it as .art or .bmp UNLESS it is a .gif. .gifs work fine.
so say i save it as image.bmp to the folder "pictures"
when i open the folder, there is a thumbnail or icon, with file info next to it (size, name etc)
although i saved it as a .bmp, it will say jpeg and when i open it it will be either a red x (if opended in a browser) or it will be an improper file and will not open at all (if opened in a graphic edotor such as mspaint).
also, if the folder is set to display thumbnails, there will be no thumbnail, just an icon, but if the picture is a .gif, there WILL be a thumbnail.
i hope that makes sense...

i then saved an image as a .art and it didn't even save as an image to my desktop. it saved as a URL: file protocol

Try this:
In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:
1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. Click the General tab.
3. Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
4. Click View Objects.
5. In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files (right-click > Remove)
6. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
7. Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times.
By the way, .art is a proprietary format of AOL and may not function the same way that the others do.

I already tried that, none of the downloads are marked damaged or unkown.
and yes, i'm using aol
by the way
i am running a virus scanner and have already detected 34 threats, i am hoping i can attribute this to a virus and fix it
i've done a search for the term "images" in subjects (in this forum) and tried all the methods provided in the microsoft support links, none of them helped

You may as well run the whole hog and done with it, in order to purge your PC: -
IMPORTANT: You must turn off System Restore prior to doing any of the following, in addition to running an AV scan, either using your own installed software or an online AV scanner.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
The reason you need to disable System Restore, is that many of these pests/virii hide within the Restore files. These are protected by Windows, therefore the scans will delete the pests/virii from their initial location, but not from the Restore folder.
Run an online AV scan, as some virii are designed to disable installed AV. In addition, I take it that you have a quality, updated and properly configured AV and Firewall on your system: -

Dl, install, update and run the following free apps on a regular basis: -

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html (SpywareGuard)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (SpywareBlaster)
http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/downloads.html (CWShredder)
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ (McAfee Stinger)
I take it you do not use p2p file sharing software such as KaZaA?

Just to reiterate sirveaux, you must turn off System Restore prior to using any of the programs that I mentioned in my previous message, in addition to running an AV scan, either using your own installed software or an online AV scanner.
The reason you need to disable System Restore, is that many of these pests/virii hide within the Restore files. These are protected by Windows, therefore the scans will delete the pests/virii from their initial location, but not from the Restore folder.
Sorry to repeat myself, however, I wanted to make sure that 'I got the message across correctly'.
Good luck...

I do use KaZaA, and Norton AntiVirus has detected and succesfully removed several virii. However there is one it has encountered several times and has not been able to remove it (quarantined it). W32.Jeefo. However I don't believe this to be the cause

Sorry. Revised link iro Panda online AV: -
http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm
It is your choice at the end of the day sirveaux, however, I would strongly recommend you remove KaZaA from your system, as it really is one of the most insidious pieces of 'software' on the net, along with any p2p software packages, may I add.
Also, do not be lulled into a false sense of security re: KaZaA Lite or KaZaA Lite ++, as it is also the programs, etcetera, that are downloaded from such p2p that are bundled with scumware, spyware, malware, virii, trojans, to name but a few: -
http://www.spychecker.com/program/kazaagone.html
A few testimonies to KaZaA: -
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,61852,00.html
http://users.sisna.com/mjmcmillan/myweb2/P2P.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/kazaa.htm
I would also advise you to run all the said programs in my previous message, along with using an online scanner, turning off System Restore prior to doing so .
IRO W32.Jeefo:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...w32.jeefo.html
Like I said, your choice at the end of the day.
Whatever you do, good luck...

And downloaded/installed/ran the following
I then turned system restore on.
I did not download the CWShredder because the page was unavailable.
The problem still persists
Also, I seem to be getting errors at windows startup, about a certain "bridge.dll" not loading.

Also,
I downloaded a registry mechanic, which detected over 500 "problems," but would only repair/delete a slim number of them, because it was a trial version.
