Question XP 98SE Network

Greetings Gurus and Gurettes,

I just purchaced a second computer and it came standard with windows XP Home Edition. I am trying to network it with my Windows 98SE computer.

Both have working NIC cards, on the SE computer i have put in most of the network info in manually because I have had it networked with other 98 machines before. The workgroup matches on both of em.. ALL caps WANKA on both.

The XP machine has the default IP address 192.168.0.1 as the mask and 255.255.255.0 as the gateway.

The 98 machine has the IP set at 10.0.0.1 and the gateway at 255.255.255.0

The 98 machine shows up on the network only on itself. (I can see it on the network.) But I am not to familiar with XP.. I have tried setting up a Small Home network using the Wizard but I still have had no luck. If there is a simple way to solve this problem please let me know.. I do not want to put 98 on both or vice versa I like have diffrent OS's on each computer to compare and contrast.

I know that this info isnt very indepth but it's all I can some up with right now. If you need more info or anything please let me know at string_chess_incident@yahoo.com or post here on the forum ill be checking back every half an hour or so.

Thanks ahead of time,

Lucidious (Tim)

Ahh I forgot to mention this network is only for my personal use.

Not for sharing an internet connection. I just want the two computer to be able to communicate with each other. For example: Moveing files from computer to computer/connecting to each other for multiplayer games etc...

Thanks again.

I have a similar setup to yours, (3 PCs) it was a simple case of using the wizard and creating the setup disk.
BTW, should the 98 machine not have an ip address of 192.168.0.2 Or something similar

How are they connected hub/router?

Each should have
IP 192.168.x.x
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.x
Default Gateway 192.168.x.x

Does optaining automatically not work?
Do you have to assign staicaly?
