Generally I've had no problems running games on XP.
Performance wise I'm very impressed - very much the same as Win2K (which is not too surprising). As always, much of it comes down to choosing the correct drivers.
If you are using a Geforce card (just a guess) then I would recommend using the official 30.82 drivers - do not touch the "offical" 40.xx ones - they are still very buggy, and many people, including myself have issues accessing the control panel for these drivers.
I mainly play a lot of Half-Life - DoD, Medieval - Total War, and Morrowind, these all run flawlessy under XP with 30.82's. I generally find the performance marginally better than under 2K. Obviously turn off all the XP performance affecting stuff such as System Restore Points (only if you are happy not running this), any scheduled tasks etc etc. If you are having problems with XP occassionally "thrashing" the HDD (especially under NTFS as opposed to FAT32), then definitely install SP1 for XP - it fixed that problem for me.
Hopes this helps - any more Q's just reply away!
