xp / xp / 98se network problem

Like many here i have a network problem.

This is the slow xp network browsing problem.

I have found many suggestions and have fixed half my problems

The problem is I have the three computer in a network sharing a hub/router. the 98se machine is the server for some files and one
DOS based program.

The two XP machines are fast when I look throw Net Neighbourhood at the shared directores on the server (ie. mapped drives)

They have a few directories with 100mb worth of data files.
When everything was 98se it was fast to browse these directories throw the Programs that accessed these directories.

But since we have upgraded to XP workstations the browsing is really slow. (10 to 20) seconds just bring them up.

****** On the first XP pro machine *********

I tried all that i could find to fix this problem..
I removed the string in the registry ---local machine, software, microsoft, windows, exporer, etc and removed the D************** string
I went add added off the XP disk the Net beui protocol under the value added directory
I went and add in the TCP/IP protocol advanced and set enable the netbios.

AND probably a few other I cant remember. and

BINGO it finally works worked and everything is GOOD.

BUT i went and tried to add the same things to the other machine
and set it up exactly the same and NO GOOD.....

I then moved the files from the 98se machine to the SECOND XP machine and tried to access the files from the FIRST machine that now running great and it was slow again, But fast ot the 98se machine.

What could be the problem ?????????

FIRST machine
XP PRO
PENTIUM 3 700
256 RAN
FAT32 FORMATED 20GIG hd

sERVER
WIN98 SE
PENTIUM 2 266
128MB RAM
FAT32 FORMATTED 40GIG HD

SECOND MACHINE
XP PRO
PENTIUM 4 1.8GIG
256M RAM
NTSF FORMATTED 40GIG HD

HELP PLEASE

Try turning the Computer Browser service off on both XP machines.

Right click My Computer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services

right click Computer Browser on right side/Properties and set type to disabled.

Reboot and test.

Any firewalls in the picture.

Boot each XP machine into Safe Mode w/ Networking and test.

Thanks Grendal but no luck

I tried the browser service off and rebooted but no luck
then i went to safemode with networking still no luck
there are no internal firewalls that i have set up
but not sure if linksys routers have anything but it would affect both xp machines not just one.

Anything else i would love to here more Ideas

Thanks in advance.

You said they are connected with a hub/router; is it a hub or router?

What is each machines IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway? They should all have very similair numbers.

It has symptons of an edge-less network.

NetBEUI should not be needed.

Is there an internet connection anywhere?

Do you have any XP drives set to 'compress drive to save disk space' ?

Good luck, and let me know.

Hi, Just a word of advice to be careful giving out all your IP addresses. I know people here would like to help, but there are some that would use that information to hack into your network.

thanks for the head up, still not much to look at yet.

Any help would be great

Could this be a DNS lookup problem or a HOST file problem
that I've read in other locations....???

And what do i look for
