internet explorer makes water drop sound

okay after a long time of fighting this battle i have come for help. when i open my IE and type in an address such as hotmail.com my computer makes this waterdrop noise sound. Its beginning to bug me. Im pretty computer literate so i know what im doing, but this time...is just too much for me to figure out. sound properties don't show the sound file, ran ad-aware pest patrol, hi-jack this i can't seem to find the source, even looking through some registry i coudlnt' find anything obvious that would be the source of the problem. So i finally come down to this place for help. Im pretty stubborn when it comes to computers because i like figuring stuff out on my own but this time...i hope you guys can help me. if not...i guess i must reformat my comp. it's about time to reformat anways...but if u can solve this problem i would gladly appreciate it. Thanks

It sounds like you have a setting in sounds and audio devices in control panel set doing this. The xp ballon choice in sounds gives the water noise (sort of) so go into control panel goto sounds and audio devices and click on sounds then check the "menu command" and see what sound you have selected for it. I am not sure what one in sounds is for IE new windowbut it may be the menu command.

But you will find it just go through them till you find it.

Do you have a toolbar popup blocker? if you do it could be the sound of blocked popups which is also anoying with yahoo toolbar.
I deleted the toolbar to get rid of the sound and just got a firewall instead

Most toolbars that create that sound when blocking pop-ups have an option to turn it off. In the Google toolbar, go to Options > (tab) More - that option is the second one from the bottom. It says "Play a sound when blocking pop-ups".

Look in C:\Windows\Media for "Windows XP Menu Command.wav." If that's the sound you're hearing, then in Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds tab, scroll down to "Start Navigation" and choose "None" in the "Sounds" drop-down list.

Answer

I was having this exact problem. I searched on the Internet using several different search engines and found nothing, even the knowledge base in Microsoft. So I went to Start/Run typed in "msconfig", went to startup and deselected eveything that was not from Microsoft, then restarted my computer. I have a couple programs that might be making this annoying sound: McAfee Virus Scan, Pest Patrol, Bell South Internet, Apple Quicktime, to name a few. I'm thinking one of them has a popup blocker that makes the sound, but it does so on every single web page. Not anymore though. HAHAHAHA.

Suggestion

Hey there,

This is my first post on any forum so I apologize if it's not done to form. I was having the problem you're describing and I found it was related to my version of "PestPatrol".

I went to the "CookiePatrol" submenu and selected "DisableSound".

Haven't heard it since.

Anyway, might not be your issue, but it couldn't hurt to suggest.

Cheers,
Macca.

Hey suby6,

Thanks for the answer, but I think you are two years too late...this thread started two years ago and i don't think the originator is standing by.

Cheers

Almost a year later...but THANK YOU. The dreaded "droplet" plagued us for years on 2 pc's - didn't notice the sound setting for Cookie Patrol.

have same problem - 2008! - need help

i have this problem on a 6 month old dell inspiron 1520 using XP

i've tried everything

contacted dell support - they don't know - except to suggest it might be the hard drive making the noise or the wireless card. When I disable wireless, I still get the noise. When I turn the cell phone off, I still get the noise.

i tried the msconfig idea

i installed and ran a registry cleaner

still - frequent water droplet noise

i shut the sound volume to OFF - still get the noise

any New Ideas on this?

Thanks

It just started on my computer too when I bring up IE. I realized that "spybot SD resident" updated today to a new version and it started right after that. So I right clicked it's icon on my lower tool bar (taskbar?) and unchecked "show info balloons" and it stopped. Hope it works for you too.
