installers wont open ".. is not a valid win32 execution"

when i try to open self-extracts, installing programs , there comes a message;
" [filename] is not a valid(?) win32 execution(?) "
in finnish its; " [tiedosto] ei ole kelvollinen win32 sovellus" so i dont know the english version for sure.

earlier it opened well those self-executives(?) but now when i have lots of other problems too , it wont.

XP home edition (sp1?) (cant really update because of this problem)
256 RAM, AMD athlon 2400+, Ati radeon 9200.

..wait a minute, should it complain 'bout "winXP execution" instead of "win32.." ?
