defragmenting & chkdsk errors

I'm trying to defrag my second drive e: and in the defrag program it tells me that chkdsk /f needs to be ran before it can be defragmented. I run chkdsk /f from the run menu and it then tells me that i need to run it at my next restart. After I restart my computer and it runs the scan disc. I run defrag it asks me to run a chkdsk /f again.

What does anybody suggest i do to fix this circle of un happiness

Thanks

hello

Defrag was not able to continue because your disk may have errors and chkdsk was not able to repair it that s why you fall into loop. Download and use diskkeeper 8 it has excellent reviews ..
good luck

how much free space is on the drive, if it does not have much or any a defrag will not run because it does not have the room to move the files. if you have enough space left, can you access the files? if so can you move them to another drive and reformat the drive because it may have file system errors, bad partition information or bad sectors. if the format runs and gives no errors put your stuff back on and see if you are good to go.

Red face Guaranteed fix!

Give yourself 2 hours for a 120 GB drive...

1. Boot your computer with the Windows XP CD.
2. Select the option to use the "Repair with Recovery Console"
3. Type chkdsk C: /r [Enter] (use the bad drive letter)
4. When it's finished, enter EXIT to restart.

This is as close to a magic bullet for drive problems as you can get. It is actually a completely different checkdisk program than the one you schedule or use while in windows. /r checks and repairs all problems found.

Info is from book: "Microsoft Windows XP Inside & Out". It cost too much but has answered about 10,000 questions for me.
