Sony VAIO Model PCVRX550

SP1 Pentium4 1.49ghz 256mb ram

Hi, I have a problem I hope someone can help. I will try to describe this the best I can.
Every now and then my pc stops, video and audio, about once per second. If I am moving my mouse it will stop then go, stop then go... or listening to anything, all video and audio, it will stop then go....stop then go...stop then go... I have to re-start my pc then it will function properly but does later return. This problem started with its original software and hardware, it happened about once every 6 months but lately about once a week. I read on sony's support website about a similar issue with a program which they had a patch for. But I dont have that program. This happens on all programs audio and video. I hope you can Help, Much Thanks hdb

First off you can try installing more Ram. It wont hurt to kick 50 on a little boost.

It seems as if some process is using up your CPU. The only way to find out is to inspect you processes and find out if you need most of them running. Find out what each is for and if its vital to your pc and you.

Press control+alt+del to view your processes
Then Start->Run-> type "msconfig" to edit what process you want to disable, be extremly careful, make sure you know what they are before you start clicking away

just asking, do you run a disk clean up and defrag often?
start>all programs>accessories>system tools> disk cleanup
then the same path to disk defragmentor.

I dont want to kill a process without knowing exactly what it is. Does anyone know of a tool I can download that will help identify these processes? I often run scandisk and defrag. Thanks soo much for the info here. hdb

There is a free program called Ad-Aware which shows you the pocesses running including company they are associated with.

When I try to post my logfile it says it can only submit 10000 charactures and mine is 20085 so I'm going to try and do this in two parts..Thanks ..hdb

Hi, I have Spybotsd and have some startups unticked for better performance but I will give you a list of them all. I just noticed that some that I have unticked in spybot are still checked for startup in msconfig!! I'll give you the list in spybot because its the longest. Thanks hdb

uncheck these and restart...most of them are diables so why have them startup.
gamma, aol, and mem optimizer...these startup but you comp doesnt really use them untill you use the program they are associated with, plus they will start on their own when you start those progs

Hi hdb

Have a good read at the following link regarding running unnecessary processes. Pay particular attention to dependancies: -

In addition, you really need more RAM, as per the comments made by o0krylon0o. 384 minimum, IMO.
