Internet Password

Somehow my username and password that let me log onto the internet have been changed. I have changed them back, but everytime I try to connect the changed userneame and password shows back up. I have to delete the user name and password and type the right one to get connected.

I am using SBC DSL, but I am not using thier software. I am connecting directly through Windows XP.

I have even tried deleting the connection and setting up a whole new connection. Still, after the first use the same changed username and password show back up.

How do I get rid of this for good?

Thanks

J. Hughes

Which Browser are you using?

Have you got a Firewall setup?

Are you running an Anti Virus application with up to date definitions?

Have you checked for 'Scumware'?

Does anyone else use your system?

No one else uses my system

I do have a firewall

I have ran antivirus and adaware and they have no effect on this.

I am using internet explorer, but the username and password for connection as far as I know do not have anything to do with the browser. I think they are part of XP

Someone or Something has breached your system security.

Neither XP nor Internet Explorer have any passwords preloaded.

What are you using to access the internet?

When was the last time you ran Spybot/Adaware/Hijack This/etc?

Do you use a modem/router to connect through win xp? if you do, try to reconfigure your modem, you can access your modem setup by typing 168.192.1.0 in the internet explorer address bar

If there are 16 asterisks in the password field then it is the correct password.

Windows XP puts those 16 asterisks in no matter what the actual password as an "added security feature." In other words. counting the number of asterisks will not give anybody who gets access to your computer any clues to guessing your password.

Since you said your username is also incorrect, try going to Control Panel>User Accounts, click on your account and then, in the left-hand pane, click on "Manage my network passwords."

If the bogus username is listed there, remove it and see if that affects your internet logon.

I tried all of the above and none of it works. Both the username and password keep changing.

I can manually change them back and log on, but when I disconnect they are changed again.

I have ran spybot and adaware to fix the problem.

I have also ran norton antivirus.

Nothing helps. I have even deleted the connection and set up a new connection
