Windows won't respond

When windows are opened on the desktop, they will not close when the "X" is clicked on. If we try to use (cntrl; alt; del), we do not always get a response. It seems to think that everything is already closed, (nothing appears in the task manager window). Upon rebooting, the problem is solved, but only temporarily. We are running XP(ver 2002) with service pac 1; pentium 4 cpu;1.8 GHz; 256 Meg ram. Thanks for any suggestions!

perhaps the reason your computer does not respond in timely manor is because it is busy doing something else... you would say that we did not launch any application yet.. true.. maybe you have a virus that gets activated on the startup and keeps your computer busy, maybe you have more than just one virus ! Have you checked for virus and pest in your computer lately ? Can you post what kind of process are running at the startup ?
