Rename Windows System Folder

Apparently during the initial setup on this computer I gave the wrong name to this user folder in Documents and Settings. I have: Administrator - All Users - and a folder with my full name on it. Cannot move or rename it because it is a windows system folder.

I booted into Safe Mode under Administrator and tried to rename it and that gave me an error upon restart: %Remove_NoDir_Error%. Also, it did create a new account, with the correct name and all my personal stuff is in the new folder. However, when I go to Start Menu to view "My Pictures or Documents", nothing is showing, because all my stuff is now in the new folder.

Do I change the path in the start menu to point to my new folder that contains all my stuff? Or do I put all my stuff back into the original system folder with the wrong name on it? I just don't want my full name on there because it is too long. Help and Thanks!

Edit: Is this the only answer? http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com... system+folder If so, then I can live with it for now.

No, you don't have to format just to get the data from the misnamed user account over to an account with the name you want.

You do, however, have to set up a new user account with your preferred name and follow the instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge base article, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile. Although the misnamed account isn't corrupted, the process is the same.

Thank you for the info Miz. I did run through the steps, but at the end, I still could not delete the misnamed account. The message said: "This is a Windows system folder and is required for windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted." So, I'll try it again later.

you cant go into documents and settings and change the name, have to go to control panel, then user accounts, click on the account icon, then select change the name.

This account does not appear in User Accounts. The only accts. in there are, my Administrators account and Guest. Another thing I've noticed is, in Administrative Tools>Computer Management, there are not any user accounts listed there. There is supposed to be an area for Users and Groups right?

Getting back to the account in question (the one I would like to rename) it is in C:>Documents and Settings.

There's no "users and groups" if you've got XP Home. That's in XP Pro.

To see the definitive list of user accounts on your computer, go to Start>Run and type in (or copy and paste from here): control userpasswords2, click OK.

The accounts listed there are all the user accounts on the computer. It may be that you originally renamed the main Administrator account which is usually hidden. If that's the case, you can't delete it.
