Cdrom not detected by XP

I have just done a clean re-install of XP home. I used a Win ME start up disk to re-format and partition the disk as I had this handy and didn't think this would cause any problems.

XP appears to have installed OK (well no errors came up). However, both my cd/dvd drive and CDRW don't seem to be detected. They don't appear in either My Computer or the device manager list.

Both devices look to be detected ok at start up although the detection of the primary and secondary IDE devices seems to now take a random amount of time (up to 30 sec).

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Just an additional bit of info.

I have just pulled an old hard drive out from my old pc and plugged it into the pc im having trouble with as a second hard drive. Everything now works fine and I can see the CD/DVD drives again in XP.

Now I'm confused!

It could just of been one of the IDE cables was not sitting correctly, putting in your old one has sorted it. If this happens again go into BIOS to see if it sees it.

Just for information incase anyone else has the same problem.

It appears to have been caused by pulling the power out of my slave hard drive but not the IDE cable. I wanted to make sure I didn't do anything silly with my data on theslave drive but got distracted and forgot to pull the IDE cable. With either or both drives fully connected it's fine but if I disconnect just the power to one of the drives I get the problem.

I still don't understand why this affected the CDdrives as I thought they were on separate IDE channels to the HD. Anyway the problem is solved and not an XP problem.

Thanks.
