Won't start up after install

PIII - 500Mhz
Compaq Presario 1600
192 Megs RAM

** Fresh install of Windows 98 (formatted HD)
Install initiates and loads files from CD. Upon first reboot it hangs at the XP startup screen.

I installed this CD (legit) on another system. Worked great.

I don't know why it won't start up after the install.

???

Thanks!!

Try to boot into Safe Mode; if Safe Mode loads try VGA mode.

The 98 disk; is that the OEM recovery CD that comes with the computer?

Was there ANYTHING else installed besides 98 when you put XP on?

I tried all 3 Safe Modes

No-go

I tried loading XP with a fresh install of 98se. No video drivers...no nothing except OS.

I then got the video drivers and loaded them for 98se. Then I installed XP.

No-go

I'm stumped. It just hangs and I don't know enough about XP to know where to being troubleshooting this problem. I've been working on it all weekend. @#$#

Well, was there ANYTHING else installed besids 98 when you ran XP setup?

Try installing XP without putting 98 in first.

Boot from XP CD, you may have to go into your BIOS and set the first boot device to CD-Rom.

Then hit ENTER to install, F8 agree to EULA, then if its an upgrade XP disk it will ask you for the 98 CD; put it in.

Then delete the partition(s), hit ENTER to install, then chose FAT ot NTFS to format; it will then prompt for XP disk.

Then it will format, and then copy the installation files, then reboot and setup will continue.

If it fails this way, you have imcompatible hardware.
