Intermitant network failure
Having quite the strange issue. I re-installed my XP box recently. After intall, the machine can not ping the network gateway after a random amount of time. This random amount of time usually is some where around 20 minutes. In another words, when first boot up the network is working. After about 20 minutes, the gateway will be come unpingable. When the Network Card no longer seems to be working, an ipconfig shows the card still has an assigned IP address. Furthermore, I can ping the IP address assigned to the card. However, I can not ping the gateway as listed in ipconfig or netstat -r.
Rebooting always fixes the problem. Dis-abling and re-enabling the network card also fixes the problem. The network card is a NETGEAR FA311. However, I doubt the card is the problem because I have Fedora linux on another partition on this same computer that works fine. In addition, this network card worked fine before I did a Windows re-install. Windows indicated I have the latest driver installed for this card.
The switch side is a Linksys BEFSR41.(cheapo home network switch) I don't see a way to change the port settings on the switch for speed. I was able to change the speed and duplex settings on the card in XP though. I also moved the cable to a different port. I tried all the different speed options, and still the same thing is happening.
After an intermittant period, network stops working. Of note: The switch and the card in the computer both shows a link state when it stops working. In addition, the activity light on card and on the switch both shows activity.
Need ideas please!
