Dont be fooled by the 256mb of ddr ram, its an overkill, inother words its not even needed, that card just needs 128ddr.

The price you are paying is way too much considering its a 9600 which mean that it runs at 375mhz GPU and ddr probably at 400mhz, check out this unit on sale get it while its HOT!

http://atacom.com/program/atacom.cgi?&SEARCH=SEARCH_ALL&ordered_number=&KEYW ORDS=9600+pro

This is a R9600pro yes it runs at 128ddr but the clock speed of the GPU is 400mhz and the ddr is 600mhz.

Classes of ATI cards:

9600XT > 9600pro > 9600 > 9600SE

But to simply answer your question...yes it would be good for playing doom3, battlefield 1942, and vietnam. A lot better than your 9000pro

here are the specs for the card you want to buy:

ABIT ATI RADEON 9600 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "R9600" -RETAIL

Model# R9600
Item # N82E16814123133

Specifications:
Chipset/Core Speed: ATI RADEON 9600/325MHz
Memory/Effective Speed: 256MB DDR/Not Specified
BUS: AGP 1X/2X/4X/8X
Ports: VGA Out(15 Pin D-Sub)+TV-Out(S-Video)+DVI connector
Support 3D API: DirectX®9, OpenGL®2.0
Cable/Accessories: VGA via DVI Adapter, 3 Cables, Driver CD, Manual
Max Resolution@32bit Color: 2048X1536@85Hz
Retail Box (See pics for details)

here are the resolutions for the 9600pro w/ 128

Resolutions:
640x480: 120 hz
800x600: 120 hz
1024x768: 120 hz
1152x864: 120 hz
1280x1024: 120 hz
1600x1200: 85 hz
1920x1080*: 16:9 75 hz
1920x1200: 75 hz
1920x1440: 75 hz
2048x1536: 60 hz

Extra ram allows more room for use of cards resources.

so the difference in these two cards is that with that extra 128ddr give you a higher refreash rate at 80hz, IMHO i think that it still make not much of a difference with 128 more ddr considering that a lot of cards have a hard time running at the max resolution.

Please keep in mind that I am comparing a 9600pro with a 9600, with clock speeds of 400mhz and 325mhz respectidly, so the processor for the reg 9600 is slower, plus the ram spped runs at 600mhz on 9600pro, as to 300~400mhz on 9600.

Plus these two cards are practically the same price, so the difference to ask yourself is speed, benchmarks for both are fairly similar, yet the Pro take the lead because of the gpu clock.

These are my opinions and everyone is entitled to their own, so which ever you choose its a fact that it would be cabale of playing your games at an alsome resolution compared to your 9000 card.

tells us how it goes keep us posted. questions, just ask.

umm...uh...hhe THANKS!

thats a good bitt of information u got there, and i think i'll buy that radeon 9600 pro while its hot at atacom, i got 62 bucks now, im getting another 50 in a couple of days, plus 40$ thats im getting from selling my radeon 9000 to my friend.
so 62$+50$+40$ = 152$!!

umm, since thats the retail price for the 9600, and since the 9600 is on sale at 109%, think theres a chance that something will have a retail price higher than that, and be sold for 152??

like maybe a even better card, that i will be able to afford once i get my 152 dollars...if so gime a link, to like something on slae or hot or whatever. if not that 9600 will do me just fine, thanks
