Possible solution to your PC response time
If you are currently using Windows xp as your os, why don't
you try restoring your system back about a week or two weeks using the windows xp system restore option found under:
Click Start
Click Accessories
Click System Tools
Click System restore
Select the option to return your system to a previous restore date
The system will display a calendar screen
Select to restore your system to a previous point when all was well.
Just a thought!!

system restore - date not available
When you view the calendar screen it will display dates and
months that you can return to and restore that point.
Those dates are listed on the calendar in Bold numbers.
If you click to return to a previous month do you see any
bold number dates on the calendar. If you do you can select
one of those bold number to restore your system to that point.
If none of the calendar numbers are in bold letter than you will
not be able to return to a previous point. This will force you to
look for another alternative.
I am leaving the office now, perhap later tonight I can revisit
your issue and give it some thoughts on what you can do next.
it was only suggestion...

No you can't convert back to FAT from NTFS, it's a one way ticket.
At least it is without something like Partition Magic, and I can't say for sure if even that will do it. You will have to delete the partition with FDISK using a win98 EBD I think, then create a new partition also using FDISK. This will be FAT32 by default (as long as u answer 'yes' to large hard disk support) cos FDISK can't create NTFS partitions. Sorry if I'm telling u stuff u already know.

More often than not, if you have reformatted, and you only have 1 hard drive with 1 big partition (a virus could hide in partition not being reformatted) it will probably be a BIOS setting which I doubt, or a hardware problem. I'm not real sure what you are getting at with the change from NTFS to FAT32, I know FAT32 is a little faster and has a less complicated style, so I can't really say whether or not that would help. But I would first check that all your fans spin up properly, re-seat all your IDE cables, clean the dust out of the case, and things like that. ALso, try disabling your virus scanner, there have been several problems with virus scanners and certain Windows updates. And don't forget, re-installing windows isnt wasting that much time when you consider how long you sit and wait for the PC to restart 29 times a day.

Do a nice clean install, your XP disc will do everything for you from formatting to the install.
If you want instructions with a picture guide that makes things much easier (so i find) then look here Windows home install
XP PRO install guide
Both the same realy..
Also Black vipers website is the buisness when it comes to XP..

heat releated?
I don't know, it could be heat related, if it freezes after a certain time. Might check that the CPU fan hasn't burned out. Or airflow hasn't been blocked out

Currtybob hit on something that may have been your original problem, your power supply may be overstressed and heating up or not enough ventilation, ie to close to a wall or desk to breath properly thus over heating, or your cpu could be overheating for the same reasons. I agree with bob check to make sure your fans on the cpu and power supply are working good and plenty of air flow. LOL Also what OS are you running, I believe XP is NTFS and 98 uses FAT32, you can run FAT32 on an NTFS formatted drive but not NTFS on a FAT32 formatted drive. LOL
