Question Service pack 1

This is my first post here so if I miss any of the required information go easy...

Computer:
Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon 2800+
Gigabyte 7N400-L motherboard (no RAID capability think, but can't be sure)
LITE-ON DVD/CD burner combo drive
One normal IDE HDD (not RAID, not SCSI)

That should be all you need...

So, every time I try to install service pack 1 (a bit late, I know) I get the message

"The file atapi.sys is currently in use by another program. Please close it and try again. [Retry] [Cancel]"

or something rather close to that. This is during the time when it's examining my system ready to back it up prior to the actual installion. What could be causing this?

I've looked around for fixes and tried a number but nothing works.
-I had Daemon tools installed but I completely removed it.
-I used msconfig to remove various startup programs, then removed everything in the startup tab, then everything non-essential in the service tab, then the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI tabs. Unfortunately when I removed some of the stuff in services/SYSTEM.INI/WIN.INI I could no longer log on to the internet so I didn't really get to see if anything worked when I completely disabled everything. I definitely did disable all startup programs and try that though.
-I tried to install a RAID controller (couldn't install it).
-I used the device manager to disable the DVD drive.

I'm about ready to headbutt the screen. Does anyone have any ideas left?

Daemon tools is probably the culprit for what i have been able to find out but like you say you deleted it..

Have you ran a real good reg cleaner?

You should go and download the best on the market which is Reg Supreme, it comes with a fully working 30 day trial..
Download it and run it in deep mode then try installing your service pack once again.

I am sorry i cannot help you much further..An XP repair would fix it but seems drastic as i am sure there is an easier answer.
If you want to repair here is what you do, you wil lose no settings at all this way, except you have to reinstall SP1 and seems like this is what you want installed then thats ok

Rebbot with your XP disc in the drive..When you get to the window prompt to pres any key do that and carry on until you get to the part were it asks do you want to install XP or repair, choose INSTALL don't worry next window gives you the choice again, now you can pick repair.

Have you number handy as XP will ask you for it, once you have put that in it will repair and when it reboots you can now install your service pack. It looks like it is installing XP but no worrys it is only a repair.
Oh and make sure you install all other critical updates..

I would not lose any sleep over sp1. It is almost history. Sp2 final will be released this summer. I'm currently running sp2 rc1 with no problems.

Got it. Turned out to be bad sectors on the HDD. CHKDSK fixed that, reinstalled Windows, installed sp1 no worries.
Thanks for the repair Windows advice
