Windows XP slow... freezes, ect

Where I worked last, we had Windows 2000. It worked excellent. However, after I left, the company switched to Windows XP... and I heard a number of people had to switch back to 2000 due to problems with XP. First question - is Win 2000 generally better than XP?

Currently where I work I was given a perviously used Sony Vaio, that is only a year old. It seems to have enough memory and processor speed, but it runs slow. I have tried defragging, shutting down extra Windows services, ect, still, it runs slooow. Like when I go to the desktop, it can take awhile and I see the icons being recreated. Other times I switch to a new window or desktop and it just sits there.

I have noticed other employees with Sony Vaios here at work complain their computer freezes alot [to me it appears their computer just go into a temporary freeze]. Desktops with XP seem to do better here than the Vaios.

Any ideas?

In my opinion (I'm not saying I'm right I just know what I've seen and what works for me) XP sucks. It has tons of bugs (Even with SP2) and is just generally a resource hog. I have never had one single problem with any Win2k machine I have ever worked on. (I administer a network of 12 Win2k computers and a Win2k server) My advice, get rid of XP. 2000 is a more stable system and it is easier to work with.

win2k VS. winXP

In my personnel opinion windows 2000 is more reliable and more secure than XP especially with SVC pack 4, XP is much more user friendly however. Its 6 to 1/2 dozen or the other. XP is very suseptable to spyware, more so than 2000. XP Svc Pack 2 has caused thousands of problems, yet none for others. If you go with Xp you have to be prepared to take care of it. Most of the spyware out there was written for Windows XP. I have two personnel machines at home, 1 with XP and 1 with win2k. The XP is more maintanance, but easier to use. the 2k is more stable yet can't do alot of things that xp can. Don't know if this helps but its another opinion. It all depends.
