Internet explorer 6 not responding

I'm using Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 and when I go to the Internet I get stuck with Internet Explorer not responding.

This happens a lot. Does anyone have a solution to this.

Thanks in advance

So many possible causes here.

Depends what king of connection you have - dial up or cable / ADSL? - check all your account / network / NIC adapter settings to make sure nothing has changed. If its cable / ADSL you should be set to auto DNS lookup - but you could try switching to manual and entering the DNS your ISP gave you (or shuld have done!)

Do you get any errors when you first open explorer?- is it trying to access the site, then not responding?

I take it you've fully patched it via windows update etc etc.

This could be caused by both a problem on your computer - S/W related, or a problem with you ISP, where you cannot connect, and the browser is erroring.

is it something that has started recently, can you think of any changes you made which may have caused this etc etc?

There are a few things to try, let me know if anything helps!

Explorer not responding only happens on one PC. I have another PC running Xp also on my home network and that PC has no problems with Internet Explore. The one that I use for some reason it has problem. I could be on any website and it stops responding. I wish I knew which software created this problem. Thanks for your response

Do you have any firewalls, Antivirus, or ANY OTHER programs running while you are on the web?

Go to Start/Run and type msconfig.

Then on the System Configuration Utility go to the Startup tab; anything in there is probably running in the back ground.
Also, look in the Services tab; and then click the box to "hide all microsoft services"' that will show you what 3rd party services are running.

And I bet you are going to see some items you did not know were running.

To Grendel

I tried clicking Start Run and then typing msconfig and I got an error message that said, "msconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file.
Any suggestions?

If you have your Windows XP CD you can try typing "sfc /scannow" in the Run dialog box.

This will search all the windows files on your PC to make sure that they are all the correct versions.

The other thing you might want to try is scanning for viruses, spyware and any others (for example websearch toolbar).
