unable to open user accounts

I've posted this same question for over a week in diffrent forums and I still have not heard from anyone about resolving the problem.

Basically here the prob...

I go to CONTROL PANEL,
Then I click on the USER ACCOUNTS icon, then I wait and nothing happens. I am able to access a part of user accounts by typing "command userpasswords2" in the run prompt. But I need to get into the User Accounts section to manipulate how the xp pro welcome screen behaves...

If there is anyone with this solution please respond.

Thanks

Looks like no-one else has yet suffered your particular problem.

Usual advice in such circumstances - System Restore (as far back as possible).

I have the same problem - on two different PCs... I have been trying to fix them for months --

It is some sort of program or virus. Everything worked fine on my pc until one day I installed Yasa Video demo, and DIVX5 codecs. I also installed a "free" video conversion program (I dont remember the name, dvdx or something) - Anyways, after doing so, I had spyware and viruses out the butt. The machine wouldnt open USERs in control panel.

My second machine worked, until I installed these apps on it. Then, I realized that NOTEPAD.exe was infected on both machines(Because it would insert itself into RUN, and tried to access the internet) - Apparently, running notepad put the spyware back on, and made USERS not open.

I've gotten rid of most of the spyware, but get this - NORTON wont open either, so much for the viruses. No Norton & no Users. I dont get it ....

I hope this helps, maybe we can figure out what program did it and how to fix it. I beleive it was either DIVX 5.1 or dvdx ....

Peace !

Hi redskyblue

Try the following, although I am not sure whether it will resolve the problem. No harm in trying, anyway: -

Type "sfc /scannow" into Start > Run, without the quotes, noting that there is a space between c and / and hit OK. Have your XP CD handy.

Go to Start>Run, type in "nusrmgr.cpl" (without the quotes), click OK. See if the User Accounts applet opens.

If it doesn't, the first thing to try is replacing "nusrmgr.cpl" with a new copy:

1. Go to Start>Run, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK.

2. Click on the "Expand File" button

3. The "File to Restore" is nusrmgr.cpl (if there's a typo, it will fail to work)

4. "Restore From" is C:\I386 (if there's a typo, it will fail to work)

5. "Restore To" C:\Windows\System32 (if there's a typo, it will fail to work)

6. Click the "Expand" button

Try accessing User Accounts again.
