Selective sound loss

Hi, I'm new to this forum.

This problem has been bugging me for several months now.

I get no system sounds, messenger sounds, or sounds from flash animations, yet I can get most file types to play sound in WMplayer and some internet sounds will play.

After I tried reinstalling an audio driver I got a situation in which the sounds that I was previously missing were beginning to play but were cut off within about half a second.

After updating my PCI audio driver to the latest version I rebooted as instructed. On closing down I got the system "tune" that I hadn't heard since the problem arose. I thought that this had solved the problem but on rebooting I had system sounds again. Now I don't even get the sounds beginnig to play and being cut off.

I don't see any hardware conflicts on the system.

My spec is below (I'm not sure of all the details but I shall try and post what else I can later):

1.25 Ghz, 250 Mb RAM.
Windows XP (pro?)
Asus motherboard(version?)
PCI sound card (make?)
Windows media player
RealPlayer (now uninstalled)
WinAmp5
Quicktime
Zonealarm (needs updating)
Norton Pro
Spybot (used regularly)
Adaware (used regularly)
Wildtangent (should I get rid of this?)

All help will be appreciated. All I can work out is that something on the system must be overiding certain drivers. Any more insight will help. If more info is needed I'll try my best to post it.

Cheers.

To find your soundcard try this ...

Start > Run > dxdiag > Sound - your device make and model should be displayed

Connect a pair of headphones to your souncrard instead of your speakers just to confirm that it isn't a speaker problem.

Try uninstalling all the 3rd party software that uses your sound card such as Quicktime, Winamp and Flash etc.

Uninstall your soundcard drivers then reboot.

When the system has rebooted install the latest drivers for the sound card and see how the system reacts, if everything is OK reinstall your applications one by one with a reboot and test between each install.
