Question Problems playing music CD in cd drive.

I built a pc for a friend using an older

KT133 chipset
900MHz Athlon w/ 133 fsb
256MB PC133
Sony CD drive
Speakers(2.1)
Windows XP Pro

Since she wanted to hear the speakers, she inserted a music cd and it played, but in an odd way. You know when you play games online you get what they call lag? Well, kinda like that. The sound would seem to jump ahead a fraction of a second and do it quite frequently. I figure its cause there's no audio cable from the drive to the motherboard, and that was true. However, when I installed that cable, there was no change. Then...
I remembered that setting in Device Manager for the properties of a cd drive for... hold on, and let me look... sorry, "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device."
Well, as it turns out, it wasn't checked, but checked or otherwise, audio cable connected or otherwise, it played the same.
It's the hardware you say? Nope, cause same drive installed in another computer with windows 98 played just fine. The CD? Nope, cause all my friend's CDs played badly in her pc.
Well, I hope someone out there has some idea of what to do.

You will probably find that it the overall system that isn't really up to running XP.

You haven't given the full system spec so it is difficult to determine whether your 256 RAM is available to the OS and applications or is it shared with the Video system etc. etc.

Unplug the speakers from the soundcard and plug them into the front of the CD ROM Drive, play an Audio CD to prove that the problem is on the Motherboard side of the system.

To be quite honest you would be as well formatting and installing Windows 98 SE or Linux on the machine and it should fly.

Ok, here goes again.
Here is a link
to my mainboard's specs. I hope that helps anyone to help me get this pc running fully. Also, the friend I gave this system to has difficulty using her cell phone. Infact, when I restored the system last time it took her a long time to adapt to the fact that she'd have to live without her old bookmarks, so please don't suggest a new OS except as a last resort.
Thanks for the reply.

Now lets see if this will post.
Edit: Sorry. I just got up and I'm still kinda foggy. The system has an AGP video card with 16MB memory. I think it's a Diamond Viper using nVidia drivers. The monitor is a new 17" CRT with the res. at 800x600. I wish I knew how to force the system to use the audio cable instead of the cpu.
