I have 2 Windows XP operating systems. One for daily work, the other for gaming, testing and benchmarking. The setup works perfectly fine.

My question is does the order of OS installation matter? (i.e installing XP before 98 or 98 before XP)

Thanks

You need to install Win 9x before XP.

Re: Second Operating System

That's it? You just install it? Like the .exe file?
Isn't there more to it?

You must install Windows XP after installing 98. When you do this, XP will automatically create the bootloader with the options. But remember install Windows XP after 98, or it will not work.

I would suggest you go to the microsoft site(microsoft.com/support) and search for making your system a dual boot. It will tell you to install 98 first. Be aware that you may have to load different drivers for your devices in 98 than the ones for xp. My kids loaded some program in 98, this messed up 98. When I reloaded the 98 side, it messed up both sides. Also remember that 98 isn't as stable as xp. If you think its nice to have a dual boot, but you really don't have a need for it, I would stick with xp. Be aware that you will have to partition your drive. This means starting from scratch. Lenny

Do you have to keep the file system as fat32 when installing win98 dual-booting with win xp?
Or Can you have win 98 as fat (It cannot be ntfs, I think) and Win XP as NTFS?

I think that both os have to be installed with ntfs as the file system when win98 is there?

My main computer has 98 / 2000 / XP Pro. very easy to do.
I just partitioned the Harddrive into three and installed 98 onto the first as Fat 32. After that threw in the 2000 disk and it will give the option as to where to install. Installed it into partition 2 and then Threw in XP disk and same thing as 2000...gives the option as to where you want it. Done! 2000 and XP are formatted as NTFS. At boot up I simply choose from the menu which to start.
You can adjust the time the menu is displayed as well as the O/S that is your "default" start. Very easy to do and very useful.

To make you system dual boot, first you have to partition your drive into two *ehem* uhh, "partitions" (sorry for that one) , the one you will use for wiondows 98 has to be i repeat has to be fat or fat32. (98 cannot access NTFS partitions). and the one for XP can be NTFS or FAT32, thats your choice when installing.

As I said on a previous post, install 98 first on the FAT32 partition, and when 98 is up and running, install XP on the other partition. XP will ask you if you want the install program to format the partition into NTFS or FAT32. pick one and install.

*NOTE: If you choose NTFS for the Windows XP installation, Windows 98 will not be able to see or access that partition, although XP will be able to see 98 and access the files.

I have that same setup on my machine, and have had no problems with either of them. everything runs smoothly.

if you are looking to install say linux on it you would have to inastall xp then use something like partition magic to partition off and ext3 filesystem then when you install linux on the ext3 partioion you need to load lilo or grub so that you will have a boot loader for xp and linux since xp does not like to be installed over anything
