upgraded from win98 -> winxp; my docs gone!

Hello

I upgraded from win98 to winxp recently. i'l just quickly outline what i did. while working in win98, i put the winxp cd. it autoplayed, and i gave the option to upgrade. everything went fine and the installation was soon over. however when i logged into the new winxp machine, i couldnt find a trace of the 'my documents' folder which was there in win98. The current folders 'c:\documents and settings\username\my documents\...' are all empty. i logged in as admin, did a complete search and still couldnt find any traces of the previous win98 'my documents' folder or its contents anywhere.

any idea where winxp might have put this? or did it wipe it off entirely??

Subject: missing files after upgrading to xp

Give it a whirl.

However, saying that, read the following article: -

You May Lose Data or Program Settings After Reinstalling, Repairing, or Upgrading Windows XP

NB - IMPORTANT

Back up whatever you can and perform a 'clean installation' of XP, as you will, no doubt, encounter further issues/problems down the line, IMO: -

Clean Install Windows XP

Good luck........................

i tried the steps outlined in the 1st link you had given. problem is, after the install, there was no directory with any of win98 users name. ie the winxp folder 'documents and settings' only contained the default user folders.

I know it is too late now, but get into the habit of doing regular backups.

Personally, I implement a disaster recovery plan, using the following software: -

Norton Ghost 2003

If anything serious were to happen, I would be up again, OS and programs, in approximately 15- 20 minutes.
