Question Windows automatic update won't work

Hi everyone

I think this is a known problem, but microsoft' solution does not seem to work.

when I run automatic updates, it scans my computer and tells me that New Windows Update Software Required. when I click on Update Now, it rescans my computer and tells me I still need the update. the update is "control update". Microsoft calls this problem "control update loops".

Their solution was to delete IUCtl.dll and IUEngine.dll and to delete "SelfupdateStatus" from the registry key "HKLM/microsoft/windows/currentversion/windowsupdate/IUcontrol"

I did this and still have the problem. Any suggestions?

Additional background info.

I had a local asian computer store build my computer, and they installed a boot-leg copy of XP pro on the machine. I as soon as I found out about that, I went out and bought a legal copy and did an update. It seemed to install ok and all my applictications work and microsoft activated it with no problems. This is the only problem I have and I can't get the critical updates to XP. Also, the name in the registration is not mine. Is there anyway to correct the registration name? I registered XP with my name, but it didn't change on the computer.

Check the computers date and time.

Do you have any Firewalls running?

Turn off all Startup Items and 3rd party services in Msconfig.
Start/run and type "msconfig"

Disable all Startup items, and under the Services tab check the box called "Hide all Microsoft services", and uncheck what ever is left. You should still be able to get online, unless you ISP needs a certain app to run on boot; but most do not

Also....
Control Panel/Internet Options/General Tab/Settings button/View Objects button.

On the page that loads remove the item called Update Class, that is the ActiveX contol that Windows Updates puts in.

Then try WU again.

It also just may be on the WU side, there is a known issue about this happening for a week now; it may not be fixable on your end.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunatly it didn't work. I might have a corrupt edb.log file and I also can't log in as administrator. That option doesn't show up. It shows as enabled under the security policies, but it's not there when I try to switch users.

Back to the edb.log - I have this error message

"Catalog Database (784) Corruption was detected during soft recovery in logfile C:\WINDOWS\System32\CatRoot2\edb.log. The failing checksum record is located at position 8:0. Data not matching the log-file fill pattern first appeared in sector 9. This logfile has been damaged and is unusable."

I don't have a backup, if I do, it's on a hard drive that XP refuses to recognize - I formated it with the illegal copy of XP that I had.

Too many problems - at least all my software is working ok... for now

If you (or anyone) have any more suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them.

Boot into Safe Mode and rename the file.
