Deleted Files Reappear Automatically

I was reorganizing my files, moving some into new folders. When I moved a block of files, sometimes a copy of the file reappeared in its previous location. When I tried deleting the copied files, they kept being recopied over and over. Is this a feature of XP, and what can I do to prevent/override it, or to solve this problem? Thanks.

You haven't stated which files you were trying to move so it isn't easy to determine what is happening.

The types of files varied, but were mostly Excel and Word files; no .exe, nothing related to the op sys at all.
