Windows hangs on shutdown

I am running a Dell Dimension 4100 w/XP home, 512 ram, 933 hz, whenever I shut down or restart from the start menu the computer hangs on the screen "windows is shutting down" and I have to use the power or reset switch. It did this before and after I did a reformatting and reinstall of XP (not for this problem.) It did it when I had a firewall and prior to reinstalling virus (norton) and firewall (Zonealarm). Before I reinstalled I had xp service pack 1, now I have not installed the service pack yet but still the same problem.

I know this problem and if u w anna solve it in windows Xp
open Device Manager then in View Menu click on (Show hiddnen Devices) after is is u see any devices disable enable it then shutdown ur PC and Enjoy

Thanks but I don't understand the comment

"see any devices disable enable it" Do you mean disable all devices shown the enable all then shut off?

No just Enable the (Disabled Devices)
