Angry "Insufficient system resources exist ..."

I am experiencing an interesting problem with system resources in Windows XP which, quite frankly, is driving me mad!!!

When the PC has been on for some time (say 10 hours +) it grinds to a halt and I get the following message when I try to open an application etc.

"insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service"

Nothing will fix it, other than to crash out and re-boot. The PC is then fine for another 10 hours or so.

I have already re-formatted this PC, reinstalled Windows XP and a conservative repertoire of well known programs, but to no avail.

Can anyone please tell me why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? The PC is running perfectly, otherwise. I just wondered if there were any issues with Norton Antivirus, as this program seems to be quite memory intensive??? Spec: AMD Athlon XP 2200+, 1.80ghz, 512 RAM, Win XP (Home) fully updated with all patches.

Many thanks, Esmeralda

Right click on the taskbar and select "Task manager" > processes.
Check to see the resources being used at an idle. You may find something is using an unusually large amount.

This may or may not be part of a "memory leak".

Thanks!

Thanks for your feedback!

Had a look, but nothing is standing out!!! Agree I'm leaking somewhere, but I can't seem to find the hole!

Any thoughts welcome!

Did you ever get an answer on this? I'm seeing the same kind of behavior, but after weeks, not hours. The largest reported consumer is SAV 10.1, but I have not been able to look at resource utilization after the problem occurs.

Insufficient system resources

I am having the exact problem - happens in a matter of hours. This is one of the only posts I've found with this exact issue. Please let us know if you ever found the answer.

extract from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095
You use a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, or Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. When you try to put the computer in hibernation, the computer occasionally does not hibernate. When this problem occurs, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API.
When you experience this problem, the hibernate feature is not available on the computer until you restart the computer.

This problem typically occurs when the computer uses 1 gigabyte (GB) or more of RAM.

I had the same problem, and i think it was just a registry problem. What i did was, i downloaded CCleaner, made sure spybot was up to date and also ad-aware and i resarted the computer into safe mode (tapping f8 while the computer is starting up) and ran spybot and ad-aware, then after those were done i used CCleaner and scanned for registry problems(make sure you scan again after the first scan finishes, because when i did the scan the second time it found more registry errors), then i restarded it back into normal mode, then i used housecall virus scan online. Housecall found a virus, a virus that even AVG didnt find for some reason. Then my computer ran faster and i never had that problem again!
