Internet Explorer Browsing Issue!

Hello,
Recently I noticed with Internet Explorer that if I try and browse a site (ftp or www) by http://usernameassword@www.URL.com method. IE will state that the page cannot be found. If I just go to the site and promted for the user/pass and enter it, than it will load. I have tried using a different browser to see if this problem was specific with internet explorer and it is. The other browser was able to load the page fine.

1) Version of XP = XP Professional (All windows Updates)
2) Hardware setup = AMD 2100+ w/ 768MB RAM, 300GB HD
3) What exactly happened leading up to the problem = I just isntalled windows and updated it via windows update.
4) Exact error messages = The page cannot be displayed
5) Any antivirus, firewall software you are running = DSL router, Symantec AntiVirus

Any help with this would be great,
