reformatting

ok i need to reformat my C: drive, but i dont have a windows XP cd, i do have a Windows Me cd tho. I know that it is possible to format C: drive in MS-DOS by doing "format C:" ( would do this in Safe mode with MS-Dos) but it says that C: drive is in use. how can i reformat with out the XP cd. (btw, i have XP and thats why it doesnt ask me anything when i turn off my comp with the ME cd in it and then turn my computer back on)

I remember i did this before, i think it was by going to from "C:\documents and settings\My name" to D: and then reformatting, so my second question is what is the command to go from "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name" to D: in MS-DOS (in safe mode)

To put it simply you cannot format a drive when it is in use as an Operating System.

There isn't any DOS in XP, to load DOS you need to boot from a DOS disk of some kind but that wont recognise your hard drive if it is NTFS.

Do you intend to install Windows ME instead of XP?

What file format is the drive, NTFS or FAT 32?

Best and simplest thing to do is download a Windows 9x boot disk from www.bootdisk.com > set your BIOS to start the machine from Floppy > Boot from Floppy > Use the Format c: command for FAT32 disks or the FDisk command for NTFS disks > Install your OS.
